Default customs fees and VAT post Brexit

I have not been charged any VAT or import duty on my first consignment of orders from China. The courier is Fed EX and normally I get a VAT quoting the tax needed to pay before the parcel has even arrived. Has import duty been removed or changed from China to the UK?

I saw that another importer has not been charged, also I've seen reports that some none EU tariffs have been liberalised after Brexit meaning brought down to zero, but I can't get definite information either way without wading through thousands of pages of guff.

Nothing has changed, other than the modest gift allowance has been scrapped meaning there are now no allowances.

Some places like Aliexpress have from 1st January started charging VAT on sales on some orders, smaller ones it seems.

All my Fedex orders are followed by a VAT/Duty invoice.

Yes vat system is changed you will get bill from Hmrc and you needs to declare in your next vat return, they basically removed the vat at the port or airport entry and business needs to add this into their vat returns

What is being removed upon entry? I don't pay any VAT to my supplier?

Given there are no gift allowances any more, does that mean every importation, even personal wares, will be assessed for VAT and a bill sent by HMRC? (That's simply not going to happen.)

What about businesses who are not VAT registered?

Will Fedex, UPS, Parcelforce etc no longer be collecting VAT and Duty on behalf of HMRC?

I wonder what will happen if folk do not respond to these HMRC demands?

I just found this one the DPD website...

Summary of changes

From 1st January, 2021:

• The import VAT exemption policy for goods of £15 and below will be cancelled.

• Import VAT will no longer be levied on goods of £135 and below. In replacement, Online Marketplaces (OMPs) or overseas sellers will be responsible for collecting and accounting for Supply VAT at the point of sale.

• Goods above 135 pounds will follow the existing policy, and import VAT will be levied.

• Therefore, overseas sellers and OMPs must register for a UK tax number (UK VAT) and collect VAT payment in accordance with the new policy.

• This policy is expected to speed up customs clearance and import of goods with a value of 135 pounds and below.

• Please note that the new rules do not apply to non-commercial transactions between private individuals (C2C).

• As the UK is still negotiating with the EU, the policy is still variable. If there is any change, we will notify you immediately.

How do they know if you're VAT registered? What about those who are but on the flat rate scheme?

How are they going to cross reference between importation and business returns?

TBH I have seen absolutely nothing to this effect, only similar to what indielad posted above.

"Goods above 135 pounds will follow the existing policy, and import VAT will be levied."

Do you have any links to the contrary please?

Okay, I have.

https://www.gov.uk/government/public...1-january-2021

It confirms that for shipments to the value of £135 are now treated as subject to supply VAT, rather than import VAT as in the Alixpress example I gave.

It also confirms that for goods over £135 then there is no change, you will not be allowed to import goods VAT free, get a bill from HMRC, and pay up later.
