We have been lucky enough to see Montana, Manning and Brady play and may be 3 of the best QBs ever to play. | Elway is in my top 5 |
Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Montana and Rice are what got me on the 49ers band wagon when I was young.
John Elway and Dan Marino were brilliant - true |

Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun That's true vogeltron - highlights of Rice were on the other day...so many stats |
| Sandy D | 12-26-2013 01:23 PM | Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun The issue I have is some believe Manning pads his stats but Montana/ Rice and Young/Rice did nothing but design plays around Rice every game.
When you get 15 balls a game tossed at you for years, you are bound to set records.
Rice was very good but I dont think he is the best ever. Montana and Young just were that good. They put the ball in his hands and gave him so many opps to catch the ball.
Never impressed with Elway myself. Dont know why. |

Never impressed with Elway myself. Dont know why. | It is hard to compare the 90's football players to what the game evolved into today. Back then guys where still getting lit up. I think Steve Young played 4 weeks in a row after suffering a concussion. Those guys that played back then where Gladiators.
Now you see a Gunner put a legal hit on a punter and they fine him like crazy just because the Punter gets hurt. I understand some of the safety precautions but lets not turn this into touch football. The DBs can hardly tough the WRs anymore. |
Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Missed Thursday night football :( hah |

DBs have become head hunters.
I dont want touch football either but todays players are out to hurt someone.
Saints players came to mind as they were getting paid to hurt players.
As far as dirty goes, no one beats the Ravena and Steelers. |
| An0nym0u$ | 12-27-2013 12:50 PM | Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun I have different take; its not so much dirty play but poor tackling skills that lead to what looks like dirty plays.
Nowadays, defensive players are taught to go after the strip/fumble. For a lot of DEF players, that just means hitting the ball carrier/receiver as hard as you can to jar the ball loose.
There was a lot better form in tackling years ago. Now, all you see are people leading w/ their helmets and don't try to wrap up & tackle. |

| Sandy D | 12-27-2013 02:37 PM | Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Something else I see. Same thing happened in baseball.
Players are paid so much money now they really dont have to put out 100% effort anymore.
Get known for being a big hitter or catching a crazy ball and all of a sudden you are worth more money.
Baseball seen it happen. Players not hustling, not running out short fly balls and then find out it dropped in.
Sad that professional sports has paid ( OVERPAID ) players to just show up.
Example would be this guy. Nnamdi Asomugha to retire as an Oakland Raider after 11 seasons in NFL - ESPN
DB who signed a gazillion dollar contact 2011 and only had 2-3 good years before that and Philly overpaid him. Not one good one year after he signed his contract. Yet they are making him out like he is some kind of amazing DB when he was not at all. |
| An0nym0u$ | 12-27-2013 03:16 PM | Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Albert Haynesworth was a huge bust that I remember. Redskins signed him to a 7yr/$100 million contract.
He barely even played due to conditioning issues and clashing w/ coaches. |

But - correct me if I'm wrong - if a player doesnt play in NFL, he doesn't get paid right? Unlike other major leagues...or am I incorrect? |
| An0nym0u$ | 12-27-2013 03:34 PM | Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Yes, that's partially true rsot. NFL players get cut often and don't necessarily get paid the entire contract they originally sign.
They will get a signing bonus (which is usually guaranteed) and their base salary which is based on their roster status.
If I read correctly, he got $32 mill signing bonus. So over the course of the 7 years, that's $5 mill guaranteed money. The remainder of the contract is based on whether he is on the roster.
If the player gets cut from the roster, he no longer gets that portion. The team saves some money by doing this and also saves some cap relief.
There are of course always exceptions and different clauses in all contracts, but this is just a basic scenario to explain that NFL contracts unlike Baseball and Basketball are not guaranteed. |
Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Thanks for clarifying - I had understood that |

Unlike other major leagues...or am I incorrect? | That changed many years ago when Kjana Carter signed a huge bonus and the nuts in the Cincinnati bengals office did not add the wording to his contract that if he did not play, got injured and could not fulfill his contract that he would only get a certain amount.
They of course did their yearly thing with all those other number 1 picks and picked the wrong player with Carter.
He got hurt right away, never was an impact and never played again.
They paid him his bonus money, his contract money etc and he hardly played an NFL game.
This changed a lot of contracts as players were getting paid for nothing.
Hainesworth was in my opinion washed up and having major issues before they signed him and they did not see it coming? |

The year prior, he was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2008, and was an All Pro in 2007. His years in Tennessee were great. He was widely considered the best DT in the sport by 2008. But then came that contract.
I'm a Giants fan and I remember when they signed him. I thought, oh no, the Redskins will have a really good on defense.
Unfortunately (and great for the Giants), once Hainesworth got his massive contract, he stopped giving his effort. He came to camp out of shape and overweight. The joke was, he got his big contract and ate his way out of the NFL...kinda like Jamarcus Russell did. |
| Sandy D | 12-28-2013 05:11 PM | Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Sad to see so many talented players who do this.
Russell was an amazing college player and I thought would be a very good QB in the NFL.
Head was not on right but had the ability for sure. |
| An0nym0u$ | 12-28-2013 11:18 PM | Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Yeah, he was nice coming out of college. One thing that is impossible to judge is desire.
I read somewhere that Jamarcus was weighing over 300lbs. |

Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Another epic fail by the Cowboys....Romo was playing but they had a chance with 2 minutes left...loser interception |

Waste of time and money. |

The Chiefs are solid. The Chargers are BIPLOAR as I have said before. You just hope the week you play them they aren't on their game.
Chargers got blown out vs the horrible Raiders, yet basically dominated the Broncos at home a few weeks ago. They also dominated the Colts and some the Chiefs at times. The AFC is more up for grabs than the NFC.
49ers I think will dominate the Packers. The Packers D has been gone away the past few seasons. Rodgers will have have to carry the team. I think have a shoot out like that classic Warner Cards/Rodgers Packers game in 2010 or whatever year it was. Where neither team I think punted.
Will also be interesting to the the Saints play the Eagles. Especially outside. Neither team has any kind of defense at all.
It is quite an interesting paradigm. Because the NFC with the Seahawks, 49ers and Panthers all have heavy duty defenses. The AFC has been pretty much outscore the rest of the teams if you can. KC held it together for the first few weeks then folded defensively.
I love the playoffs. Anything can happen. Going to be an exciting weekend.
Chargers are my team not to make the Superbowl but to knock out some teams. Have some big upsets. |
| Sandy D | 01-01-2014 04:45 AM | Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Still only two teams stand out.
Chiefs and Seahawks appears to be moving up with Denver and San Fran they they get beat.
Finally some coaches get axed that needed it. |
Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Love the playoffs too - the Saints vs Eagles will be interesting - 49ers should advance. |
| Sandy D | 01-02-2014 03:49 AM | Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun College football is so much more fun to follow.
The games today proved it.
When little known UCF beats Baylor who was considered on the the best teams in the country like they did it tells you something about how exciting college football can be.
Some really good games coming up and the Auburn v Fla St is going to be a must see. |
Re: NFL Season 2013 has begun Those college football games and bowls were fun, so true Sandy. I say the UCF beating Baylor and my friend was saying how big it is. |
